Collectie: AOC MARGAUX

What is the history and culture of the Margaux appellation?
Margaux is the southernmost communal appellation of the Haut-Médoc and Médoc wine regions, and the closest to Bordeaux. In addition to the great quality of its terroir and its wines, this also explains its success in the famous 1855 classification, with no less than twenty-one classified growths. It is the record among all the communal appellations of the Médoc: it would be tedious to mention them all, but let us mention in particular the châteaux Margaux, Brane-Cantenac, Rauzan-Ségla, Rauzan-Gassies, Giscours, Kirwan, Palmer or Prieuré-Lichine. It has the rare privilege of being home to a Premier Cru Classé, Château Margaux (a privilege shared with Pauillac and Pessac), the cru that gave it its name, which is unique. It covers 1521 hectares, which makes it the largest of the communal appellations of the Médoc, ahead of Pauillac, Saint-Julien and Saint-Estèphe, and encompasses five communes: Arsac, Cantenac, Labarde, Margaux and Soussans.

What is the production of wines of the appellation Margaux ?
In 2020, the Margaux appellation produced 55,000 hl of wine, only reds. When white wine is produced, for example the famous Pavillon Blanc of Château Margaux, it is in the Bordeaux Blanc appellation (dry), but this case remains anecdotal.

What is the terroir of the Margaux appellation, its geography, its landscapes, its soils and its microclimate?
The soil is essentially clay-limestone with superb gravelly hilltops which give the wines their exceptional character.

Which grape varieties are grown in the Margaux appellation?
Typically Medoc, the Margaux appellation confirms it by its grape varieties, with a majority of Cabernet Sauvignon (54%), followed by Merlot (38%), then Petit Verdot (4%) and Cabernet Franc (3%).

What is the style of the wines of the Margaux appellation?
Margaux wines are fine and elegant, with a harmonious and ample mouth, supported by a fine weave of delicate and tasty tannins. The finish is full of harmony and elegance, a guarantee of a wine that can be kept and aged slowly.
