Description

The refinement and aromatic finesse of a Moulis red wine

The estate

It was in 2008 that the Cuvelier family, already owners of Clos Fourtet, Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion, acquired the Château Poujeaux. Since then, the beautiful Médoc estate has experienced a true renaissance. Led by Mathieu Cuvelier and Christophe Labenne with vinifications carried out under the advice of consulting oenologist Stéphane Derenoncourt, Château Poujeaux stands out among the most beautiful references of the Moulis appellation, on the left bank of Bordeaux.

The vineyard

Located northeast of the Moulis appellation, the vineyard of Château Poujeaux extends over 70 hectares in one piece. The 30-year-old vines on average benefit from an exceptional location on the Günzian Graves slopes. This great terroir perfectly benefits the Médoc grape varieties. From this terroir-grape variety match, great wines typical of the Moulis appellation are born, between density and elegance.

The 2021 vintage

A mild, wet winter encouraged early budbreak. This head start was slowed by the particularly cool conditions of a spring marked by frost, which affected the most exposed plots. The rainfall recorded in May, combined with mild temperatures, led to strong disease pressure until late July. Subsequently, the clement weather in August and September provided ideal conditions for refining ripeness right up to the harvest.

Vinification and aging

Harvest took place from September 30 to October 14.

Plot-by-plot vinification: fermentation of whole berries in 51 temperature-controlled stainless steel, wood, and concrete vats. Extraction via pump-overs. Maceration lasted 20 to 25 days.

Aging for 12 months in barrels (33% new, 67% one- and two-year-old barrels).

The blend

Cabernet Sauvignon (55%), Merlot (40%), Petit Verdot (5%).

Appearance

The wine displays an intense garnet color with subtle violet hues.

The tasting

Nose

Vibrant and expressive, the nose blends floral (violet) and fruity (blackcurrant) aromas with enticing notes of gunflint and cigar box.

Palate

The attack is soft and velvety. The palate delights with its silky tannins, minerality, finesse, and elegance.
