The property
Château Cantenac-Brown was built at the beginning of the 19th century by John-Lewis Brown in the commune of Cantenac. The property presents an English Renaissance Tudor style in memory of the latter's Scottish origins. Year after year, the magnificent Cru Classé of Margaux acquires an international reputation for the quality of its terroir and its wines. At the end of 2019, Château Cantenac-Brown enters a new era in its history following its acquisition by the Le Lous family. Important investments and restructurings are carried out, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, to bring even higher the excellence of this Classified Growth of Margaux which enjoys a very good reputation.
The vineyard
The vineyard of Château Cantenac Brown covers 48 hectares in AOC Margaux, 3.5 hectares in Bordeaux and 1.8 hectares in dry white Bordeaux. Under the direction of José Sanfins, the vineyard is managed with respect for the environment. The soils are maintained in a traditional way in order to favor microbial life and chemical balance. The fertilizers used are only of plant origin. Thanks to highly mobilized technical teams, each vine stock is the object of full attention.
The vintage
The mild conditions at the beginning of spring favored the early budding of the vines, followed by significant rainfall until mid-June. Episodes of sunshine allowed a rapid flowering which took place in the best conditions. Marked by particularly dry conditions, the summer was punctuated in mid-August by rainy spells that saved the vineyard and the ripening process. In September, a heat wave combined with a refreshing wind favored a good concentration of berries. Despite lower than average yields, the harvest is of great quality.
Vinification and maturation
Fermentations were carried out at temperatures 4 to 5°C lower than usual in order to preserve the aromatic richness without exaggerating the tannic structure. This 2020 vintage marks the introduction of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Margaux plateau and the Cantenac Brown enclosure into the blend. The wine is aged in French oak barrels, 60% of which are new and 40% in one-year-old barrels.
Blend
Château Cantenac Brown 2020 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (67%) and Merlot (33%).
