Weather conditions during the growing season

After a rather tricky and unpredictable spring, and after we had taken great precautions in the face of a protracted period of rain, the vines reached the flowering stage without any adverse impact on their health. The flowering then took place in fine conditions thanks to the arrival of mild, sunny weather.

The summer consisted of a long period of drought and heat; however, good vine canopy management enabled the vines to stay in excellent health. Water deficit stress during July brought great tannic structure to the fruit, while the fine August weather provided high quality.

Rain then injected the vines with energy and strength and kick-started the continuation of the phenolic ripening process. The fine, mild weather during September and then in October allowed us to wait until outstanding levels of ripeness had been achieved. Alternate cool nights and sunny days slowly refined the tannins. The harvest began at the end of September and stretched out over 3 weeks.

The cellarmaster’s view

Thanks to favourable weather conditions, the grapes reached excellent ripeness levels.

The vinification was carried out in good conditions with alternate pump-overs, punching down of the cap of skins and rack and returns. The post-fermentation maceration provided flesh and volume on the palate to wines that had already acquired harmonious balance.

Tasting notes

This 2016 vintage exhibits an attractive, deep colour, a lovely balance between very harmonious fruit and power. The tannins are fine and suave. The finish is long and elegant.
