The property

Château Angélus is one of the prestigious Premiers Grands Crus Classés A of Saint-Émilion. This mythical property of the appellation was founded in 1782 and, for 8 generations, the de Boüard de Laforest family has watched over this exceptional heritage. The Carillon d'Angélus is the second wine of Château Angélus.

The vineyard

Carillon d'Angélus 2020 comes from an 18-hectare vineyard whose parcels are spread over clay, clay-sand-limestone and draining soils.

Attentive to its environment, the property is committed to converting to Organic Agriculture and the vineyard is certified High Environmental Value level 3.

The vintage

The high rainfall during the winter and spring allowed the soil to build up a water reserve throughout the year to preserve the balance of the vineyard. The 2020 vintage is marked both by a prolonged drought and by the ability of the soils (clay, limestone) to provide perfect balance by drawing on water reserves. The summer conditions were ideal to ensure good ripeness and to give healthy, balanced grapes rich in polyphenols. Balanced and complete, 2020 is a perfect synthesis of its two illustrious predecessors, 2018 and 2019.

Vinification and maturation

Vinification is carried out in inverted truncated stainless steel vats, with vatting and extraction by gravity. A pre-fermentation maceration precedes an alcoholic fermentation and a post-fermentation maceration of 1 to 3 weeks. 50% of the wine is placed in barrels as soon as it is run off and 50% after malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for 16 months in barrels, 60% of which are new and 40% in one-wine barrels.

Blend

This Carillon d'Angélus 2020 is a blend of Merlot (90%), Cabernet Franc (10%)
